Q: What made you write “Jojo”? Was it a genuine experience or something you thought out?

I took the name “Jojo” from the film Jojo Rabbit. The song has to do with my experiences of co-dependency and addiction.

Q: The song lines up Jojo as being inside your head and running like a rabbit constantly. How did you choose that imagery?

It’s constant stimulation – the Energizer Bunny and Donnie Darko are both in there.

Q: There is so much contrast in the song—obsession, insecurity, love, and struggle. Did you tackle these emotions deliberately, or did it just happen naturally?

There’s emotional addiction and there’s substance addiction. When they align with the same person, it’s a dangerous combination.

Q: The music is highly hypnotic, dreamlike. Is that in line with where your head was at while you were writing this?

For sure. The feeling of experiencing the world in a void. It’s the only song on the EP where the beat came before the lyrics.

Q: There are a lot of sensory descriptions in the lyrics—hot, licorice, tongue-flicking. What were you thinking about in including those types of things?

Sex.

Q: You call insecurity “so mainstream.” Do you think there is pressure for individuals to hide their actual feelings?

Absolutely.

Q: The song also appears to reference love and insecurity. Do you think those two feelings are necessarily intertwined?

Dependency is a driver of insecurity, I think. Dependency is a dark form of love.

Q: What does Jojo mean to you? Is he just an individual, or is there more?

She is a person and a state of mind.

Q: The idea of Jojo on a tightrope between your temples makes the person sound like they have control over your mind. Do you ever get fixated on someone?

It has happened.

Q: The song also speaks of struggle and conflict within. Do you find that music helps you to process those emotions?

Definitely.

Q: What is live playing of “Jojo” like? Does it bring back the emotions you felt when you wrote it?

I’ve never played it live! I’ll get back to you.

Q: Is there a lyric of “Jojo” that you find means the most to you or that you find is most personal to you?

The tightrope line was the catalyst for the rest of the lyrics, so gonna go with that one.

Q: What do you hope people can take away from “Jojo” when they hear it?

I hope people can relate to the experience and turn their own pain into something of beauty.
