New Single by Vargen Brings 18th Century Venice to Life in “CASANOVA”

On April 2, Swedish artist Vargen released his latest single CASANOVA, a broodingly seductive journey into the myth and enigma surrounding the world’s greatest libertino, Giacomo Casanova. It was a timely release, falling as it did on Casanova’s 300th birthday, and one that was not going to pass without being marked with a celebration in decadence, mystery, and sound.

Set in a 18th century Venice — where bridges and canals join with carnivals, masks, and fleeting loves — CASANOVA gives a nod to the past in a manner greater than a tip-of-the-hat. Underpinned by a lilting 6/8 time, period harpsichord, the music imparts the seductive danger of poisonous allure. Swaying with loveliness and tension, the music tells the tricks and temptation that had characterized Casanova’s days.

The single is the second in the music and video triptych 3 ITALIANI INFAMOSI which recounts the tales of the three infamous Italians: Caravaggio, Casanova, and Caesar. The first video CAESAR opened initially on the festival circuit as part of the celebrations for New Year’s Eve in 2024 and generated a buzz from international film festivals, including nominations for acting, direction, and making a music video.

Reine Johansson, or as he is known artistically, Vargen, is known for his blending of story and highly emotive sonic landscapes. His earlier works, some of which were Bob Dylan translations and arrangements of Swedish poet Dan Andersson, had gained both international and domestic acclaim.

CASANOVA lays the foundation for the third installment, CARAVAGGIO, releasing on April 25th. If part two is anything to go by, Vargen’s artistic take on history is nothing but breathtaking.
