Soek Unveils Debut Single “Scania”: A Cinematic Single Born Out of Passion

Grant Borland, a composer with his music appearing on Netflix, Apple TV, and Disney+, brought Soek, his one-man artist project, into the world with the release of its debut single, Scania, on June 3, 2025. In this one-man project, he diverges from his successful sync career, with Soek being a space for Borland to create a personal, experimental sound.

Drawing on a trip to Iceland that shifted my perspective, Scania is a moody, reductive soundscape that distills the essence of the experience. In effect, the track blends classical inclinations with muted electronic timbres, making for a reflective atmosphere that invites introspectivity. A processed vocal gives it rhythm and closeness, and heightened emotional power thanks to the addition of a live string section, provided by Martin Kutnar and Session Strings Studio.

The album was recorded in Durand, Michigan, in Borland’s home studio, with Croatian strings and mastered by Piotr Wieczorek in Vancouver. Having worked with artists ranging from Hania Rani in modern classical music, Wieczorek’s mastering gives that finishing touch of excellence to this already potent composition.

In references to Max Richter, Olafur Arnalds, and Hania Rani, Scania is a melancholy tribute to contemplative music. It’s not so much a tune as a sonic snapshot in memory, a slow-burning unspooling in increments through shifting textures and accreting emotion. A promising introduction from Soek, with emotionally crushing and boundary-breaking music to follow.
