RISE
Q Can you talk about the inspiration behind “Lost for Words” and what motivated you to write it?
This was taken from the attitude and experience from the band’s original singer, Steve Kinley following a split with his then girlfriend
Q How did you approach the challenge of turning a breakup into a positive message in the lyrics?
This was very much Steve’s approach to life, “sh** happens”, pick yourself up and move on positively…you have to admire this approach don’t you
Q How do you feel being “lost for words” represents the initial emotions after a breakup?
Everybody is taken aback to some degree with news like that; it’s how you then “move on” and “grow” that’s important. Everything is temporary isn’t it.
Q How important was it for you to make the song universally relatable to anyone who has experienced a breakup?
To us it was more about not falling apart and trying to show that even in negative situations, you can still move forward and grow
Q The song talks about watching things change—was that meant to reflect personal growth or a broader life lesson?
It’s more about life, as I said, nothing is permanent and things change, even when we don’t want them to
Q Can you share your thoughts on the idea of taking control and moving forward after a difficult ending?
We did move the lyrics around slightly following Steve’s death in 2022. This was to reflect that even in extremely dark times and from dark places, the people around you can still move forward; they can keep your attitude to life going.
Q What role does the idea of starting again play in your own life and experiences?
See above, that’s what inspired the song.
Q Did writing this song help you process your own emotions or past relationships?
Not really for me…well not much, but absolutely for Steve and Alex (our drummer), his early experiences of relationships were “interesting” for us all! lol.
Q How do you think the song communicates resilience without sounding preachy or forced?
The words are from the heart, we never intended to tell anybody what to do, it’s more observational; more of a guide that good things may still yet happen.
Q Can you talk about the role of self-awareness in the lyrics of “Lost for Words”?
It’s the initial response to that statement of we are done!!….and Steve actually said “I’m lost for words…but I’ll move on!”
Q How do you want listeners to feel after connecting with the song?
Positive, only positive. This is the antithesis of self-pity.
Q Do you think the song can help people see breakups as opportunities rather than failures?
Yes 100%; that’s exactly what it is supposed to represent…a new beginning and a new opportunity.
Q Were there any specific moments in your life that directly shaped lines in the lyrics?
For Steve yes, we wrote them down as observations and built the song around Steve’s situation and his larger than life reply of OK…I’ll move on.
Q How do you feel the song’s lyrics reflect your personal philosophy about relationships and change?
Good one, simple, try to be positive in any situation; it’s not easy sometimes (it sometimes seems impossible), but you should always try.
