Martin Lloyd Howard Captures the Mystery of the Scottish Highlands with “Highland Mist”

English guitarist and composer Martin Lloyd Howard continues his exploration of instrumental storytelling with “Highland Mist,” an original single released on August 1, 2026. The track offers an atmospheric journey inspired by the quiet mystery, open landscapes and distinctive character of the Scottish Highlands.

Originally trained as a classical guitarist, Howard has gradually expanded his musical world to include folk, blues and rock. “Highland Mist” reflects that versatility while remaining closely connected to the discipline and expressive approach of his classical background.

For this recording, Howard moved away from his usual fifty-year-old handmade classical nylon-string guitar and instead used a Tanglewood steel-string acoustic tuned to DADGAD. The idea developed naturally while he was experimenting with the tuning for another project. A fingerstyle chord sequence caught his attention, immediately suggesting images of rugged landscapes and a mysterious Celtic atmosphere.

What makes the piece particularly interesting is Howard’s melodic use of DADGAD. Rather than treating the altered tuning simply as a way of adding texture, he turns it into an important part of the composition itself, helping “Highland Mist” build its own distinctive musical identity.

The recording process was equally straightforward and authentic. Howard recorded the piece in his home loft with a single Rode NT4 microphone positioned around nine inches from the guitar.

Following previous releases including “Selene,” “Winter’s Light” and “Hidden Andalucia,” “Highland Mist” is another strong example of Howard’s aim to create accessible solo guitar music capable of painting pictures and telling stories without words.
