Running in Place

Running in Place is a song performed by JEFF VIDOV that presents a deep inquiry into human struggle with destiny, choice, and existential confusion. The words of the song contain a lot of images and comparisons that seem to reflect the internal fight between desire for control and inevitability of fate.

This phrase is repeated throughout the song, ‘running in place in the same direction’. It captures the feeling of being stuck in a rut while trying to fight fate but paradoxically proceeding towards it. Through this reiteration, one realizes how senseless it can be contemplating changing course because however forceful you try to change your path, the outcome remains unchanged. The lyrics “playing with fate – what’s the ramification?” suggest that we may think otherwise but repercussions follow whenever we challenge what is naturally meant to happen.

Through his use of French such as “Mes pensées sont les miennes” (my thoughts are mine) and “Les fins ne nous appartiennent pas” (the ends none of our own), Vidov steps back into his own mind and reminds us that while our thoughts belong only to ourselves, where life ultimately leads us is beyond our individual control. This duel between choice making and determinism is the central contradiction of this track.

The lines read: “Knowledge makes kingsᅳBehold my ascension!” Here, there seems to be an attempt at acquiring power through insightfulness; however even with such information, destiny still manifests itself. The song closes on a somber note raising the question whether or not the recipient is “running out of time,” leaving one pondering for their own purpose.

All in all, “Running in Place” deals with destiny in its complexity and deepness of thought, interweaving it with urgency and self-examination themes.
