IVY ASH
Q: How was “Tonight” inspired, and what made you want to make a song so centered around self-love and empowerment?
I drew inspiration from my own experiences and struggles with body image as a teen. I wanted to create something that my younger self would have really needed to hear back then, so it turned into a way for me to express all those bottled-up feelings. Since it dropped, I’ve discovered that a lot of people relate to it, which is so awesome because it means I can connect with others who’ve been through the same stuff.
Q: That line “I’m loving my curves, super dimensional girl” is so strong. Can you talk to me a little bit about the place that body positivity holds in your life and your music?
My music and life are deeply connected to this. Growing up, I always felt out of place, and I want my music to shout body positivity and promote embracing every shape and size.
Q: You said in your pitch for the song you were going to talk about breaking chains of societal pressures. Can I get a little more specific on that? What some of those societal pressures that you’ve faced yourself? And how did you actually face them and move forward?
In 2024, social media can seriously mess with our heads and make us feel bad about ourselves. It’s mad how many of us get caught up in those unrealistic standards that no one can actually meet! I’m all about promoting self-love and embracing who you are. Honestly, taking breaks from social media is a game-changer—try turning off those notifications, having a phone-free day, or just logging off when you need a breather. It’s all about taking care of yourself and doing whatever works for you!
Q: “All my unhappiness, the misery, the heartache, and the pain” is such a raw lyric. If you could, tell us, what’s the journey you went through to move past those struggles.
It’s been quite the wild ride, full of epic highs and some pretty tough lows. I’m super glad the realness of the lyrics shines through, especially since I’ve had my fair share of struggles. But you know what? The silver lining is that I’ve managed to push through the tough times and come out stronger!
Q: How does writing on self-love and empowerment affect you personally? Does it help reinforce those values in your own life?
Definitely! It also helps me to understand previous situations and the past more; hindsight is a wonderful thing!
Q: You speak of being your “own cheerleader” in the song. How do you place importance on being self-sufficient with inner motivation, especially within an artistic career?
I have to be my own biggest cheerleader sometimes. There are moments when it feels like I can’t rely on anyone but myself, so I’ve got to keep that motivation up and keep pushing forward. I know—it’s easier said than done, but I’m working on it! Whenever I catch myself being negative, I give myself a little pep talk and hit that reset button.
Q: “I went from zero, now the mirror calls me hero” is such a powerful transformation. What was the turning point for you that helped you see yourself as a hero?
I’m all about embracing who I am and finding happiness in that! Going from feeling like I’m nothing to actually loving myself—quirks and all—has totally changed my mindset and outlook on life. It’s pretty wild how a little self-love can make such a big difference!
Q: You do say in the song, “It’s hard living when I am stuck in this habit.” How do you stay strong on the inside and break out of those thought habits?
Honestly, breaking a habit is no joke! I’ve learned that I’ve got to be in the right headspace to take it on. But keeping a positive mindset can make a huge difference.
Q: What do you hope listeners take away from “Tonight”?
You’re not alone in this! Figuring out self-acceptance and love can be a tough journey. So take it easy on yourself and remember to be your own cheerleader along the way!
Q: What advice you would give to someone who is struggling with self-doubt or negative self-talk like you describe in the song?
We can be so harsh on ourselves; try to be kinder with your inner voice. When I catch myself being super critical of myself, I just need to remember to go easy and be kinder. Not every day is going to be a total win, but focus on the little positives that you can. That’s what advice I’d give: celebrate all of your wins no matter how small!
Q: What role does music take on for you in your own personal healing and growth?
It’s everything to me – during the good and tough times. Music is my therapy!
Q: Is “Tonight” more of a personal declaration to you, a message to your audience, or both?
I began this project as a self-help song to express my own emotions and basically vent to get everything out via song, but it quickly transformed into a vibrant pop anthem that resonates universally with anyone facing the same struggles of self-love and self-acceptance. It’s become a celebration of learning to love ourselves fully, and I’m really happy to share this with others.
Q: How do you think your music, particularly songs like “Tonight,” challenges societal expectations?
It’s super important to remember that we’re all human! We all have our own struggles and stuff going on. Sometimes, social media makes it seem like everyone else has it all together, but that’s definitely not the reality. It’s a good reminder not to keep comparing ourselves to others!
Q: How has your audience responded to “Tonight” and its message of self-love?
All the love and support have totally blown me away since the release! BBC Music Introducing Leicester even picked my track as their “Song of the Week,” and it was amazing to chat about the story live on their Saturday evening radio show. Even if some people don’t show it outwardly, they might be dealing with their own stuff, and honestly, music is such a great comfort during tough times.
Q: What’s next from you after “Tonight”? Do you plan on taking a deeper dive into themes as shown within this track in upcoming music?
A little exclusive here – I’ve got a brand new track dropping on 22nd November 2024! It’s called “Invincible” and it really dives deep into themes of facing the truth and self-acceptance. The song reflects my personal journey in both life and working within the music industry, exploring all of the many ups and downs.
