Hupo Open a Bold New Chapter With A Few Sparks

Hupo return with A Few Sparks, a striking new album that marks one of the most ambitious moments in the Xi’an instrumental rock band’s career. Active since 2010, Hupo have built a strong identity through expansive compositions, cinematic arrangements, and a deep sense of craft, but this new release shows a band willing to challenge its own history instead of simply repeating it.

Released through 1724 Records, A Few Sparks is Hupo’s first full-length album in three years and features eight brand-new tracks across more than sixty minutes. The record moves beyond the post-rock language that first brought the band recognition, opening its sound to krautrock, psychedelia, ambient textures, folk-influenced details, and the wide landscapes of Northwest China.

The creative process behind A Few Sparks began in 2024, when the band made a conscious decision to tear down familiar habits and rebuild from a new place. That sense of renewal gives the album its emotional weight. Tracks such as Soulstep Highland, Waterweed, Millet Field, and A Thousand Hills reflect different sides of the band’s evolution, from meditative atmospheres and hypnotic grooves to traditional instrumental colors and slow-burning instrumental storytelling.

The album also stands out for its living, physical energy. Some of the material was recorded live together at Xi’an Concert Hall Recording Studio, capturing the chemistry of a real band in motion. Guest contributions, including saxophone, chao’er, flute, and voice, add further depth to Hupo’s already immersive sound world.

Since its release, A Few Sparks has received editorial support from Apple Music across Mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, including placements in New Music, Breaking Alternative, and Asian Alternative playlists.
