Q What motivated you to create a song about a friendship that defies societal expectations?
R had examples of this type of relationship around me among my friends and family and I said to myself that it must affect a lot of people.
Q To what extent is “My Best Friend” drawn from your personal experience?
R I also had some beautiful friendships with girls but which unfortunately did not last but they were very rich as relationships
Q Do you believe society continues to have difficulty accepting platonic cross-gender friendships?
R Less and less I think but it still raises questions for many people who think that it is not possible.
Q Why did you incorporate emotional safety and trust into the song’s lyrics?
R : These are the qualities necessary for a strong and lasting friendship and it is not a question of gender.
Q Where did you get the idea that you and your best friend were “rebels”?
R You have to be rebellious not to listen to right-thinking and make sure that friendship is not a question of sex.
Q What were you thinking when you wrote the line about not playing by their rules?
R In our society there are dogmas that are hard to break and friendship between a man and a woman is something that can be shocking. We must make this feeling universal, even if it means breaking certain rules.
Q Why do you think that some people are uneasy with friendships like the one you’re describing?
R It’s not common and many people think it’s impossible because one of the two people could have feelings for the other.
Q How do you handle other people’s judgment or misunderstanding of your close friendships?
R We should not take this into account, some people understand it very well but for others it remains something impossible in the long term.
Q What sort of message did you want listeners to take away with them after listening to this song?
R I tell them to try it, it will be your most beautiful story, you must not be afraid, change the rules
Q Did you immediately know that this was going to be a friendship song and not a love song?
R Yes, I’ve had this theme in my head for a long time and I thought it was a good subject for a song.
Q How do you think the song would have been different if it had been a love song
R If I hadn’t treated the text from the same angle, it would have been less subtle and much less ambiguous.
Q Have you ever found yourself in a position where a romantic partner has been unable to understand your close friendship with another person?
R Yes and I understand very well that it is not easy to think that we can have a beautiful friendship with a person of the opposite sex but I will explain it and prove that it can exist.
Q Do you think the song would have been different if it was written from the other person’s point of view?
R No, I think that in this type of friendship we have to think the same way, otherwise it can’t work.
Q Are there any other songs that you’ve written on the topic of non-romantic connection and love?
R No, not at the moment, this song was already very difficult to write, it’s easier to write a story that’s just romantic.
Q Did you discover that this song clarified your own convictions regarding friendship?
R Yes it was clear in my head at the beginning of writing I just put the words and the melody to make it easy to understand for everyone
