Q: You say Hip Hop needed someone like you and El Gant. What do you feel makes you different from other artists making music today?

The quote was that Hip-Hop needed one from myself and El Gant. Hip-Hop has always requested collaborations from its current shining stars and we are that to the culture right now. 

Q: The line “Deep impact / bigger than rap” suggests transcendence of the genre. How do you see your legacy as an artist?

I’m etched in stone at this point. My longevity has been more than proven. Now it’s more about how much more unexplored territory and digital real estate I can conquer before I call it a wrap.

Q: What do you mean by “attack like it’s 95 and peel a cap” with regard to themes of your song?

Back then a lot of rappers used the term “peel a cap” or “split a wig” which is street terminology for a headshot. If you notice we all end our verses with that.

Q: What do you want people to feel or think after they’ve listened to “Magnum 88”?

Simply that authentic Hip-Hop is still being crafted and that we will not be pushed to the side as an old artform.

Q: How important is it to you that your music inspires self-reflection or conversation between the people in your audience?

I always hope it does at the end of the day. But I make music I want to play on long drives or when I’m cleaning the house.

Q: What does the title “Magnum 88” mean to you, and how does it relate to the concepts of the song?

Not really too deep. A popular pistol is a 44 Magnum. I just reversed it and doubled the caliber. It’s a metaphor for how the three of us veteran Emcees are still gunning it!
