The picture painted of the sun rising in the nightmare is quite vivid and speaks much about the contrast of hope and fear, light and darkness, experienced in this song. As the song progresses, this contrast appears to be constant. There is always some form of pain, and there is always some form of movement forward, as evident from the “say it” refrain, which seems to be an attempt at demanding some form of truthfulness from oneself, as though Andy Mclaughlan is demanding this from himself, telling himself not to hide anymore.

The image of the lion represents pride and strength in the second verse. Being a lion on the sands of time represents strength but also the passing of time, that nothing stays the same forever. The fact that there is poisonous rhyme refers to the idea that it hurts when someone lies to you. There is anger in the song as well as an element of regret. When Andy Mclaughlan speaks about someone whose lies turned out to be the truth, the point is made that lies really can hurt you. That does not prevent the individual from climbing the mountain out of spite, showing rebellious qualities. He does not allow you to define him.
