Q: What was the inspiration behind “The Edge” regarding the concept of fate?
We usually take our inspiration out of our daily lives. Specifically from experiences that we encounter. Our singer really believes in this concept, and how life always finds a way.
She also likes mystery, hence the mysterious and sultry sounding vocals. There wasn’t really a specific spark for the creation of “The Edge”, we usually create songs, or at least the instrumental, from jamming during practice.
Q: First verse-in life’s seasons. Which season of your life do you feel affected this song most?
We wouldn’t say a specific season or period in our lives affected this song as much as the concept of letting life find its way was always a part of us.
Q: How do you think the concept of mysterious ways plays into your music and lyrics?
We find that life always finds a way to make it interesting, sometimes it doesn’t completely make sense what life throws at you, but somehow it always works out.
Q: In the chorus, you say, “I’m living life on the edge.” What does that mean to you on a personal level?
We find that in life, to make your dreams come true, you need to take risks. Sometimes all that separates you from success is a leap of faith.
Q: Obviously, the song is about adjusting to change. How do you adapt to change in your life?
We don’t necessarily find that song is about change, but more about letting life and the universe lead the way, and to enjoy the journey. So it’s more about the way you deal with what life throws at you.
Q: What place in overcoming obstacles would courage hold for you, as mentioned in the song?
Sometimes in life when there’s a roadblock, we need the courage to overcome these, and believe that your life will find a way. There are no positive experiences if you don’t have negative ones first.
Q: It’s reassuring to use the metaphor of the unseen force that catches you when you fall. Do you have some instances where you felt that kind of support?
In instances where something unforeseen happens, like a break up or the death of a family member. This force comes in the shape of our bandmates or a friend or family member, but sometimes it’s just something random that happens which helps you get past that negative experience.
Q: The message is firm in the line; “I don’t believe in coincidence”. How do you interpret coincidences in your life?
The song is about faith so there are no coincidences, these are just things or situations that were meant to happen, you can either try to avoid them or deal with them in the best way possible.
Q: You said, “Connect the dots in life.” How do you think your experiences led to who you are today as an artist?
All the connections we made in life are what led us to find each other and share our passion for music. That bond or connection gets strengthened with each new song we write and each time we perform together.
Q: If you say “thoughts are changing,” what do you mean by that, referring to personal growth?
This sentence refers to outside forces changing your perspective on certain situations. It’s more about the direction that life takes you and allowing that to shape your thoughts.
Q: The outro chorus really seems to enforce embracing one’s fate. How do you feel accepting this can empower someone?
We find that people need to listen to their intuition, because somehow it’s usually correct and it leads us in the direction we were meant to go. It’s really empowering to learn to trust your own gut feeling.
Q: How much role does intuition play in your songwriting, and how does it dictate creative choices for you?
When we write songs this starts off with something instrumental and while we are jamming on these ideas, we let intuition lead the way, we play what we feel. Lyrics also come to us in a way, but this takes a more iterative process.
Q: The song brings in hope and confidence. What do you hope should emerge from “The Edge”?
We would like to reach a bigger audience and play bigger shows. We’ve had a couple of experiences playing for large crowds and we really felt alive during those shows so we would love to play for larger crowds.
Q: If you don’t mind, could you share with us how you balance personal experiences with universal themes in your lyrics?
The experiences we write about are experiences that anyone could encounter. Even if we write mostly from our own perspective, we find that the lyrics are general enough so anyone could find meaning to them.
Q: How do you feel that “The Edge” fits into the broader narrative of your music as a whole?
In our first album we were still experimenting with different sounds and finding our style, with this first song of our new album we have found more what we like in music, a bit of a heavier sound, but still with 80’s and modern rock inspirations.
Q: What was it like to write this song, and in what ways did this process differ from your work previously?
Writing this song went very naturally, as do most of our songs.The instrumental base came together very quickly. We put the finishing touches on the song while we were recording in the studio.
Q: The theme of support is huge in this song. How do you like to build a sense of community with your fanbase?
We like to build a connection with our fans through our music, our social media platforms, like Facebook, Instagram. Recently we’ve also started to make some short TikTok videos to engage in a more personal way with our fans. Some of our fans that we see at multiple shows we’ve come to know pretty well.
Q: Were there any particular artists or songs that inspired you in the process of creating “The Edge”?
We would say that for the more eastern sounding part we were inspired by the sound and tonal choices of TOOL. The vocals were then inspired by one of our singers favorite bands, Iron Maiden.
Q: How do you hope this song will affect a person who might be going through a tough time?
We hope this song brings them solace and encourages them to keep their head up. Even if they’re having a tough time now, it will get better.
Q: There is a reflection of spiritual journeying in this track. How does spirituality inspire your music?
For this specific song, spirituality was a part of the inspiration, but this is certainly not a constant in our songs. We also like to write about current topics (at the time of writing) that happen around the world. For this song we chose a more spiritual approach for the lyrics because our singer is interested in this topic and a lot of people resonate with the belief in something greater than ourselves.
Q: Going forward, how do you envision your music changing while retaining the key messages from “The Edge”?
We think that every song should have its own message, even if that message is not always apparent. Every song should be able to stand on its own and it’s not always necessary to have a relation to other songs.
We think the messages of “The Edge” will mostly inspire us in our musical career and personal lives about decisions and chances we get.
