Losem Turns Self-Sabotage Into Cathartic Power on “Hangnail”
Nashville-based Losem released “Hangnail” on October 16, delivering a striking single centered on the struggle of self-sabotage and the feeling of constantly getting in your own way.
Written and composed by Kels Taylor, the track explores what it means to become your own worst enemy, approaching the subject with directness and emotional honesty. “Hangnail” also marks another step in Losem’s artistic evolution, moving away from Taylor’s classical music and folk rock roots toward something more raw, intense, and personal.
The single was produced by Matt Bolton, who also contributed additional instrumentation. Taylor first created bare-bones demos in their living room before bringing them to Bolton’s home studio, where the ideas were expanded into something much bigger.
Drawing inspiration from Hayley Williams, Indigo de Souza, and Mannequin Pussy, “Hangnail” captures Losem at their most expressive, combining intimacy, intensity, and a strong sense of artistic identity.
