LÜCID LOVERS Reinterpret a Classic with Fresh Cover Single “Obsession”

Lücid Lovers announced their latest release on July 25th, 2025, a theatrical cover of the iconic hit “Obsession” — originally written by Holly Knight and Michael Des Barres and made famous by Animotion. The Cleveland duo, made up of The High Priestess and The Hierophant, puts its own dark synth-pop and industrial spin on the timeless hit, updating it while still nodding to the original.

What distinguishes this release is the duo’s commitment to authenticity. Breaking from digital detours, Lücid Lovers produced the track using only hardware synthesizers, electric guitar, and bass. Their vocals are left raw and unfiltered — no over-tuning or vocoding — to allow the emotion of the performance to take the forefront. The result is a sound that is somehow both nostalgic and refreshingly earthy.

Recorded, mixed, and mastered at Audio Alchemy Studios, the song had the advantage of a special production style. Utilizing MIDI sequencing to control various hardware synthesizers, the pair literally directed an “electronic orchestra,” shaping each sound to resonate at their own frequency while maintaining the integrity of the original song.

Lücid Lovers have been honing their sound since 2020, and “Obsession” is a milestone on the journey. With their first EP of original work scheduled for release by the end of 2025, this cover is a teasing taste of what’s to come. For now, though, focus remains on creation — with live performances planned for 2026.
