Neska describes being seduced toward the other and unsafe and deeply disturbed at the same time. The metaphor of the hot tub from her own-life construction becomes just as appropriate metaphor for the entire song—a symbol of temptation and unsafe affect terrain.

Neska’s writing is sharp and frank, from fragile sensitivity to harsh fact. She describes being dragged into something dirty and sticky, as with the comparison of the other’s presence as disease. This potent metaphor shows just how emotionally trapped and intruded upon she remains, and yet how she loves.

The repetitive refrains of “broken promises” and “shot tires” draw the portrait of tension and repetition as if the relationship exists trapped in some ongoing cycle of betrayal and hurt. The vocabulary conveys damage and suspicion and little doubt remains things are far from all being okay.

In the latter part of the song, Neska juxtaposes disgust and astonishing admissions of love. This betrays just how difficult it has been to get better, no matter how bad things may appear. The repetitive apologizing at the song’s conclusion does go on to further this emotional befuddlement—she apologizes for the way she does feel, as if the sentiments themselves are inappropriate.

There’s bitterness too to her tone, most explicitly with lyrics criticizing the other’s conduct. But beneath all this, there’s hurt. The lyrics convey how hard it is to be yearning for intimacy and it isn’t safe to be known at all. Neska’s work does an admirable balancing act of restraint/honoring holding back and sarcasm and bare sentiment at once and making them all intimate and interesting.
